Nice tour to Ethiopia’s north-east region of Afar. Mostly days consist of driving long distances in a Landcruiser (over mostly good unpaved roads) to reach remote spectacular spots, such as salt lakes, acid areas and volcanoes. The itinerary was well followed and sights were spectacular.
Beware that there is zero infrastructure in the area - sleeping is under the stars on portable matresses, there is no water supply (apart from bottles in the car - no cooler though), electricity, toilets, etc. This gives a special pristine feeling to the experience, but it is worth mentioning as it was not that clear to me prior to realizing on spot.
Explanations on the various spots are provided through guides, while drivers stick to their job of driving, which they perform in a safe manner throughout. Meals are served in camps and restaurants, with rather limited choice, as understandable given the remoteness of the area.
