We travelled from Osh to Dushanbe (8 day private trip/tour) along the Pamir Highway with Visit Alay, and it was easily the best trip we’ve ever done.
What truly made this trip exceptional were our driver Joomart and our guide Muhammed from Alichur. I can’t emphasize enough how incredible they both were. Joomart is an extremely skilled and calm driver, you’re navigating rough terrain, high mountain passes, and unpredictable conditions, and he handled everything with total confidence. We always felt completely safe, even in the most remote areas and during tough weather conditions.
Muhammed (from Alichur) brought the entire journey to life. Being from Alichur, he had a deep, authentic connection to the region that you simply can’t replicate. He shared stories, local knowledge, and cultural context that made every stop more meaningful. Beyond that, he was genuinely one of the kindest and most humble people we’ve met, always checking in on us, making sure we were comfortable, and going out of his way to help with anything we needed.
Both of them were also hilarious, there were so many moments of laughter throughout the trip that made long drives feel short. Their energy, kindness, and authenticity turned what would already be an amazing trip into something truly unforgettable. By the end, it didn’t feel like a tour it felt like we were travelling with friends.
The route itself was unreal. Starting in Osh, we passed through Sary Mogol with views (when the clouds cleared) toward Lenin Peak, then climbed into the high-altitude landscapes of the Pamirs. Crossing the Ak-Baital Pass at nearly 5,000m felt surreal.
We stayed in places like Alichur, Murghab, Khorog, Langar, Khalikum, and drove through the stunning Wakhan Valley, visiting Yamchun Fortress and the Bibi Fatima Hot Springs. Hiking into Jizeu village was another highlight completely remote and untouched.
This is not a luxury trip and it’s important people understand that. You’re travelling through very remote, developing regions. Roads are rough, weather can change quickly (we even experienced a snowstorm), and amenities are basic. But that’s exactly what makes it so special.
The homestays were consistently warm, clean, and welcoming. Every family we stayed with was incredibly kind, and the food was simple but great. It felt like the most authentic, local experience possible.
If you want something real, meaningful, and unforgettable this is it.
We did this as a couple, and it exceeded every expectation.
10/10 – best trip we’ve ever been on, and a huge part of that is thanks to Joomart and Muhammed.
We had a great experience travelling with Visit Alay through the Pamirs! Everything was well organized: We got help organizing visas for the Gorno-Badakhshan province and the staff at Visit Alay gave us a useful introduction on our first day.
The itinerary itself was fantastic, and the overall travel experience was fantastic thanks to our driver, Kokon, who was both kind and considerate. I got some problems with altitude sickness, but he was always helpful and reassuring. In the end, the problem did not affect my overall experience thanks to him.
Kokon is also a very careful driver. I have travelled through Tajikistan before, and had some bad experiences on the road. Not this time: Although the standard of the roads may vary a lot, we felt safe all the time. He communicates very well in English, has a great sense of humor and makes everyone feel included. In the end, we felt that Kokon had become our friend.
We would recommend him and Visit Alay to everyone travelling through the Pamirs.
What an incredible adventure over high passes, through stunning landscapes, and along the Afghan border! Our driver Kokon was a delight and had good English. We stayed in guesthouses with shared rooms and often a hot shower. Food was decent if a bit samey. Highly recommended to see the unique Pamirs region (with hikes too) and take the slow road to Dushanbe.
