We had an amazing camping adventure at El Mirador. The 30 minute helicopter ride helped us understand just how far we traveled into the jungle. For the air we could other remote Mayan cities and circled the great La Danta pyramid at El Mirador.
Our guide, Cesar was very knowledgeable and gave us in depth explanations about Mayan and modern Guatemala history. The local archeologists know him well and trust him in their camp where we ate and slept.
The women slept in an empty guest “bungalow” which had cheap foam mattresses on wood platforms. The men slept in a tent. The howler monkeys groaned all night, but we slept well.
We were worried about heat, humidity and mosquitoes, but these were not problems. It heated up to 90+ degrees for ~one hour around noon, but otherwise it was 65-75 degrees and not humid.
