    We visit the lava tunnel Raufarhólshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. We will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while we walk in the path of a lava that flowed thousands of years ago. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light. The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock.

The tour guide was very kind, and knowledgeable. The site was beautiful. I was a little unsteady, as most of the rocks were large and unbalanced, a more rugged hike than I had anticipated.

We booked two tours, the Lava Tunnel and the geothermal tour. Both were cancelled in the afternoon on the day before leaving us no time to book an alternative tour. Thank goodness we booked the rest of our vacation with Midgard Adventures or we could have spent the entire week in Reykjavik. Extra frustrating, you have to manually request the refund and they send out requests for you to review the tour they didn’t give you including follow up requests when you don’t respond. Just a terrible experience all around.

The cave itself is an incredible sight to behold. The walk in and out of the cave wasn't too strenuous and was totally worth it to experience the breathtaking cave. Our guide was knowledgable, funny, and welcoming, and we had a great experience on the ride over and back. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in volcanos but not looking for a full on hike!
