University's Square, Bucharest, Romania Your private guide will pick you up from your hotel in Bucharest. Romania, a country with a long standing tradition in wine-making, is the world’s 11th wine producer, despite losing half of its arable lands after the 1989 revolution and despite suffering a loss of prestige several decades ago, when communists favored mass production over quality. Nowadays, the country has gone through a process of mass restoration, aiming to retake its rightful place among the Top 10 wine producing countries.
Bellu Manor, Urlati, Romania We'll head towards Dealu Mare, Romania’s most famous wine region. After driving for about 1 hour and 30 minutes, we'll enter the old Wine Road and stop at the beautifully restored Bellu Manor, a marvel of traditional Wallachian architecture. Built by Baron Alexandru Bellu in the 18th century, the manor is not just a great art collection, but also an important wine museum. With a great passion for wine and even owning a sparkling wine factory, the baron stored precious tools in the manor’s cellar: the oldest wine press in Wallachia, enormous barrels and extremely old wine making tools going back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. 60 minutes
LacertA Winery, Buzau, Romania Our 2nd major stop of the day is at Lacerta Winery. Yes, it’s around noon so it’s time to start drinking some good wines! Same as Bordeaux or Tuscany, Lacerta’s wine estate on Dealul Mare stretches along the 45th parallel and thus has the ideal climate for producing wines with a rich, complex and silken taste. Lacerta is one of the most modern wineries in Romania, with production techniques based on gravitational principles meant to limit the usage of pumps. You'll take a guided tour of the winery, taste 6 high quality Romanian wines along with a plate of cheese & charcuterie, all in a fairy tale location. Surrounded by the endless vineyards covering the hills of Dealu Mare, this is one of the most beautiful wineries in the country. 120 minutes
Valea Bobului, Romania The 3rd and final stop of the day is at Casa Colinelor, a boutique winery and also a family owned business. In other words, it's the best place to experience the local wine culture in a cozy, fully private way. After lunch, we can chill out on the terrace to admire the beautiful vineyards surrounding the house, visit the cellars and taste 6 types of Romanian wines along with a plate of local cheese & charcuterie. Late afternoon, after enjoying quality wines and having spent a peaceful, relaxing day in the country side, it’s time to say goodbye to Dealu Mare’s hills and head back to Bucharest. In vino veritas! 180 minutes

The guide was very knowledgeable about history. I enjoyed speaking with him. The two wineries were hospital. The first one gave the full tour of how they made & bottled. We compared wine that were cask aged vs only bottled. Was able to taste the difference. It was rainy day, but this was a great way to spend it.

Prior to visiting Romania for the first time, my wife and I had no idea that Romania had such a rich and long tradition of wine making. To that end, Mihai, our tour guide, did an outstanding job of introducing us to that tradition by taking us to visit (and sample the wines from) several active Dealu Mare wineries, as well as a fascinating museum located within the grounds of a former estate in the Dealu Mare region. Mihai was punctual, extremely friendly, knowledgeable in many topics wine related and not, and fully conversant in English--all of which made for a great conversation as we drove with him through the Romanian countryside, effortlessly solving all of the world's problems (if only). In sum, we had a great tour of the Dealu Mare wine region and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a personalized introduction to the interesting wines of Romania in the company of a wonderful guide--call us "pleasantly surprised" indeed.

This trip was amazing and exceeded our expectations. The wineries we visited were quirky and and full of interesting characters who made us feel very welcome; the wines we sampled were the best we've ever tasted and we even got to sample some at different stages in the fermentation process. We were also given copious amounts of food and even whole bottles of wine surrounded by the most beautiful countryside. So very good value for money considering all we got for it.
What's more our host Mihai was incredibly friendly and tailored the experience to make sure we had the best time. He's really knowledgeable when it comes to history. So no need to do an additional walking tour- Mihai will give you that for free while driving around Bucharest and Delu Mare!
We'd definitely do this tour again if we came back to Romania.
