Wet meadows that lie just above, or even below, the water table. A paradise for meadow birds. A farm landscape with long ditches, pollard-willows and cows, turning mills and swaying reed beds. You cycle in a small group on the dikes and look almost beyond the horizon. Welcome to Old Holland's countryside and the oldest industrial area in the Netherlands. This is the place where hundreds of windmills once stood, now only a few remain and you will visit one (outside the touristic area) to see how it is done. You will make a stop at the Old Dutch village "Zaanse Schans" with a cheese tasting and clog making.

A whole pile of articles, 'made in the Zaanstreek'. Good chance that such products were bought in the stores around the corner of the Zaan retail group Albert Heijn.

    The very best paper in the Netherlands, perhaps even in Europe, used to come from the Zaanstreek. It was beautiful white, smooth, excellent for writing and was therefore traded as far away as America. The Zaankanters had invented the secrets behind this quality product themselves. At the last remaining paper windmill in the world you see it for yourself how paper was made at that time. In the weekend this mill is closed. On Saturday we visit a unique saw mill that is operating on Saturday only.

    The Zaanse Schans is a unique part of the Netherlands, full of wooden houses, mills, barns and workshops. Look inside the warehouse where clogs are made. The cheese dairy and the various mills are also not to be missed.

This tour was amazing! Such a memorable day! Hans was an amazing tour guide with so much knowledge! It was like a Dutch history lesson! We were on the tour with a really lovely family who really made it even more awesome! The ride was easier than I thought and the weather was great (aside from a little rain) and the countryside was beautiful. Highly recommend booking!

Immersion into the culture of the Netherlands. Experience how locals are affected by tourists, when you become the bicyclist. Great adventure: learning the history, seeing the countryside, tasting local cheeses, watching how to make Dutch shoes, and CHOCOLATE!!

As a family of 4, this was a great adventure! Hans was a wonderful guide that provided great information, maintained our safety, and allowed us to have a relaxing and fun experience! This is not your typical large group tour. Our kids are 10 & 11 and thoroughly enjoyed their day as well. The biking portion was beautiful, and the our experience in Zaanse Schans was very memorable. Everything from tasting various types of gouda, to learning how clogs were/are made, to our final stop for ice-cream was great. Hans, we can't thank you enough.
