This walking tour of Dublin is a mix of everything from history to hidden culture. Join historian Alan Byrne on a three-hour walk which is suitable for visitors and locals alike. The tour takes in everything from the remains of Medieval Dublin, through to its rebellious struggles against the British rule, as well as taking in life in the city, its street art, characters, and hidden mischievous pranks.     We begin our tour visiting Dublin Castle grounds and gardens. Here we'll see the sites of the foundation of the city, as well as get a look at the central location of the 700-year period of the British rule. NB the tour is of the grounds only.

  • St. Patrick's Park, Dublin, Ireland
    We will visit St. Patrick's park beside the cathedral. We will hear about the contribution of the Guinness family to the heritage of Dublin through their charitable works including the restoration of St. Patrick's Cathedral and the establishment of the Iveagh Trust housing complex.

  • Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland
    Here we will see the 1000-year history of Dublin's oldest building dating back to viking times. NB the visit is to church grounds only.

  • Fishamble St, Wood Quay, Dublin, Ireland
    Here we will see the Dublin's oldest street and hear about the excavations which unearthed the remains of the original viking city.

  • Temple Bar, Dublin, Ireland
    We take a brief detour into Temple Bar. Here I'll point out the lesser known shops and bars, as well as give advice on places to avoid.
  • The Icon Factory & The Icon Walk, Dublin, Ireland
    We will visit the Icon Walk and see how a public art project brightened up some of the darker places of the city.
  • Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
    We will pass by Dublin's oldest university, and hear a little about its long history and famous alumni. I'll also give some advice on visiting the popular Book of Kells and Long Room library.
  • O'Connell Street, Dublin, Ireland
    On O'Connell street we will learn about the long struggles of the 19th and 20th century against British rule which culminated in the rebellion of Easter 1916
  • GPO Museum, Dublin, Ireland
    At our last stop we will learn some of the reasons behind the rebellion of 1916 as well as get a look at some of the damage which still remains from the week long battle over 100 years ago.

Alan was an amazing tour guide with extensive knowledge on the history of Ireland. It was only my girlfriend and I on the tour, so Alan was able to show us some hidden historical locations and insights into this amazing city. He was able to cater the tour to our interests, and we couldn’t have asked for more!

Not knowing what to expect from a walking tour - Alan made this such a pleasurable experience. The hours flew by as it was like walking and conversing with an old friend who just happened to know EVERYTHING about Ireland. From the churches, to castles, to hidden spots off the beaten path, Alan's tour was leisurely and very professional as he kept us on track and we covered a lot of Dublin. Alan took the time to learn a bit about us as well and I left the tour feeling I had gained a friend. I cannot speak highly enough about Alan & would highly recommend him as a guide. You won't regret it!

My husband and I spent a long awaited afternoon with Alan (we’d been planning this outing for nearly 3 years). We were starting an organized tour the next day, and Alan was great about complimenting what we’d be doing on that tour, and what he showed us, and adding to our experience overall. There is so much history to Ireland that we didn’t know. We are the kind of people that enjoy explanations about what we’re seeing, vs just wandering around with no understanding. Alan was a great teacher, and we greatly appreciated his time. I only wish our schedule would have allowed a second visit/ tour with him. He also has a website where he shares lots of his favorite things around town, that I’ve enjoyed also. Thank you so much Alan !!
