I want to share my thoughts on my recent stay on the Tarot boat in Luxor marketed by carrefour but others also, leclerc, private trips.
Blue Nile cruise without indicating the name of the boat necessarily!
This trip has presented many unacceptable dysfunctions and practices, which seriously affect the traveller experience.
1. Welcoming and formalities at the airport
- Payment of the visa stamp (25 € / person) plus 40 € Service fee, presented as covering driver or services, although it is a commission of the agency. Some people did not even have a visa on their passports and were forced to pay the fees.
- Cash payment to the accompanying guide for the “remuneration of the staff on the boat”: the guide told us verbatim that this payment is €30 per person to be made at the end of the stay, i.e. €60 per couple, the modest sum of €1,200
2. Transfer and location of the boat
- Transfer by bus to the boat: 25 minutes from Luxor. The boat is stationed in El Boghdadi, in a totally off-center area and very unattractive. All boats are grouped in this area, edge to edge, at the tail leu leu.
- Result: no visibility on the Nile, unbearable smell of diesel, constant noise from engines.
Presented as a temporary location for work, but it does not appear to be in progress. The more luxurious boats enjoy locations closer to tourist areas.
3. Boat and cabins
- Minimalist comfort: exterior and interior minimally renovated, upper deck redone, but cabins remain very obsolete for the majority.
Some renovated cabins are limited in number, although they are spacious.
- Our cabin: permanent leak in the bathroom requiring towels to be wiped off the floor, air conditioning out of Service throughout the stay. Despite staff intervention, no effective corrective action was taken.
- Significant noise at the stern of the boat due to engines; glazing is not enough, a noise-cancelling headphones is strongly recommended.
- Recommendation: request a change of cabin if it is too exposed to noise.
4. Guides and excursions
Guides encourage travellers not to buy in local shops to avoid being ripped off, and accompany them only to the shops they recommend. As a result, as soon as we got out, the travelers didn’t go to the local merchants and buses arrived without any sales being made.
Guides would take us to their shops to buy papyrus, essential oils or stonemasons. During checkout, the name of the guide was systematically asked, thus ensuring their commission.
– The guides also asked not to give small pieces to the children who asked, while partitioning us and directing us exclusively to their shops, which considerably reduced the business for all local traders.
-Last day: museum outing of Luxor. The guides proposed a “museum + cornice” trip at 10 € per person, without actually visiting the museum. They explained that the agency offered the tour at €35, but it is obvious that this trip was programmed by the three guides for their personal benefit, and the budget was allocated directly to them (“on the pocket”), and not for the real cultural visit.
5. Personnel and Service
- Efficient Staff (Daily Cleaning, Catering Service).
- Correct catering but fixed placement limiting exchanges between travellers.
- Drink prices: all drinks on board are at least 10 times more expensive than outside (120 EGP versus 10 EGP for a bottle of water).
Exorbitant drinks pack: 120 € per person for the whole stay.
6. Health and safety
- Significant intestinal disturbance: we were sick during the cruise, and easily more than 40 people showed similar symptoms, revealing a real health problem on board.
– Passport retention: the reception asked to keep our passports for 24 hours, illegal practice, I refused to leave them. No safe in the cabin.
7. Environment and framework
Banks of the Nile, roads and agricultural areas littered with plastic waste.
- Passivity of local authorities to pollution.
- Boat location edge to edge, limiting sight and increasing noise and fuel nuisance.
8. Tourist programme and supplements
- Unless you are relaxing all day over the last two days, you will have to plan supplements to complete the program.
- Not included must-sees such as the Valley of the Kings and Abu Simbel, only offered at an extra charge.
In summary, this visit was marked by:
- Our cabin with leakage in the bathroom (requires sponge with towels) and air conditioning out of Service throughout the stay
- Deplorable area and constant noise
- Commercial practices of guides favouring their commissions
- Rigged excursions to the last Luxor museum
- Excessive fees (visa, guide fee, drinks)
- Health problem affecting more than 40 people
- Very high prices of drinks
For me the best thing about the trip to Egypt ES the cruise POR the Nile. EN our case we got the Alyssa Motorhome and it was spectacular. The pool a little small POR putting something, but the cabins, the food, the staff, everything unbeatable. Our guide Amro, a well DE wisdom, who made every excursion better. ES the second time I have repeated (previous time EN another cruise) and it also went very well. A luxury to be EN the sun loungers DE the terrace observing the wonderful landscape of the River Nile.

Hicimos el crucero con el barco???? Concierto I. Hicimos 5 días y 4 noches de Luxor a Assuán .
