The synagogue was built with the permission of the Emperor in 1826, and designed by the renowned architect Joseph Kornhäusel. The guided tour gives a good introduction to the building and also the history of Jewish life in Vienna, going back to the 1100s. On the day we went, there was a small group of about 10 people. The tour was guided by a young lady who was well spoken and clear with her facts about the history and the current Jewish community in Vienna. You must book in advance and turn up a bit early to get through the necessary security on the entrance.

Our tour guide at Stadttempel was fluent in English and very knowledgeable of the history and symbolism of the building as well as of the Jewish community in Vienna.
I am Christian but very interested in other religions, and frankly, it was refreshing to visit a sanctuary in Vienna that wasn't filled with gold and sculpture. I particularly enjoyed learning about the Jewish community in Vienna through the last couple of centuries. I would recommend this tour to my friends and family.
