The Naadam Festival is the most important, biggest event and holiday of Mongolians. The main festival is held in the capital Ulaanbaatar, although other provinces and small towns across Mongolia have their own, smaller scale Naadam celebrations. It is three manly sports: wrestling, archery and horse racing“

    Walk to Government House to see Soldiers on horseback, sometimes dressed in Chinggis Khan Warrior’s regalia, will get the nine white horsetail banners at the Parliament house where they are normally displayed and will then ride in procession through the city, later to be placed in the center of the National Stadium, from where we will be viewing the Opening Ceremony.

    Naadam festival is opened officially by the President of Mongolia. At the stadium, a huge procession is held including hundreds of adults and children dressed in costumes representing Mongolia’s numerous ethnic groups. The opening ceremony features a colorful show with folk music and dance, parachute show and more. The first round of wrestling will start immediately thereafter. After that you will see the archery competitions where contestants can only rely on his keen eye, firm hand and experience, take aim at a target of fist-sized baskets; and ankle bone shooting competition.

    We will drive to Khui Doloon Khudag, the horse racing field. Mongol horse racing is part of a living cultural heritage, similar to the equestrian tradition that brought the Mongol armies to faraway places during medieval times. We will see the four-year-old horse racing. The horse race is actually a bit far from the barriers set up for visitors, so bring binoculars! We can visit nomadic tented camps that have sprung up behind the race track and experience a concentration of nomadic Mongolia at one site!

The Naadam Tour 2023 gets a two-star rating from me for a number of reasons, the main one being its organization, or lack thereof. Firstly, despite being assured of a small group size, we ended up in a bus with around 40 people, which significantly diluted the intimacy and personalized experience we were expecting. Although the groups were split up during activities, it was still quite a crowd to manage. In addition, there seemed to be a lack of attention to personal dietary requirements. My vegetarian preferences and egg allergy, which I had explicitly communicated, were overlooked at breakfast, which left me feeling uncared for and disappointed. The lunch provided felt more like a snack than a substantial meal. The dining experience was also rushed and uncomfortable, without the leisurely and enjoyable atmosphere that one would expect during such an experience. Lastly, the tour timeline was rather disorganized, with the day concluding in a confusing flurry of lost participants and waiting times. For the price paid, I anticipated a more seamless and well-planned experience. While the staff were very friendly, the logistical issues significantly impacted the overall experience. I sincerely hope that the organizers can use this feedback to improve future iterations of this tour. This event has the potential to be a fantastic cultural experience if better organized.

OMG what a Nadaam! I was picked up from my hotel as arranged, Oggy & Niz (apologies I'm sure I've spelt the names wrong) then looked after us for he entire time. The whole team was amazing, looked after us during a very busy schedule. We got to Sukhbaatar/Genghis Khan Sq to see the parade start, got to the Nadaam Stadium to watch the opening ceremony - there was so much to see! Saw some horse racing, some archery, some wrestling, a knuckle bone contest, some tricks on horses and soo much more. Fantastic, thank you soo much everyone.
