The city subsequently welcomed a population composed mainly of Andalusians and Megorachim then of Moriscos and remained prohibited to Christians on pain of death. Only the explorer Charles de Foucauld defied the ban in 1883. Between 1471 and 1561, the city was governed by the Banou Rachid dynasty, descendants of its founder, nominally vassals of the Wattassid sultans, and was reunited in Morocco by the Saadians.

    Morocco Desert Travels’s driver, will pick you up from you hotel or Riad at 8 am for the fascinating drive to the North of Morocco for you to explore the unique and beautiful small city of Chefchaouen, the famous “Blue City” of Morocco. You will drive through the verdant forests, broad, lush valleys, deeply cut gorges and towering mountain peaks that surround the city of Chaouen. Wander through the narrow streets, painted in blue and white, of this peaceful place founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali ben Moussa as a kasbah, or walled fortress which you can still visit today. It has a more recently added and very picturesque garden too. Moving through the blue alleys, with the bright sun reflecting from the walls is a feeling somewhat like walking under a shallow blue sea, an amazing sensation. The markets are full of genuine, good quality local handicrafts, with styles not found elsewhere in Morocco; broad brightly coloured ‘sombrero’-like hats, decorated with ornamental thread, hand-woven blankets in bright patterns and a range of woollen clothes. The town square, surrounded by restaurants and cafes where you may be able to sample the delicious local goat’s cheese is another place to enjoy, sit down, relax and breath in the rich atmosphere. There are many other monuments to look at, including the 15th century Grande Mosque and the Place Mohammed park with it’s stunning views of the Rif Mountains. At the end of the day you will be driven back to Fes and dropped off at your accommodation

Madih is a very kind and professional driver and guide. We were hosted in Fes el bali and he drove us to Chefchaouen to spend the day. He explains everything about the history and culture of Marocco in a good and simple way.

On a passé une tres bonne journée avec mr madih notre chauffeur qui etait tres sympa on est parti de fes a chefchouen ( the blue city ) en passant par les montagnes du rif un paysage magnifique on a pris des photos d'une vue panoramique de la ville bleu on a visité les ruelles de cette ville ensorcelante au style espagnole grace a madih qui connaissait parfaitement les lieux il nous as fais decouvrir plein de bonne choses on a mangé de delicieux repas traditionnel des tajines dans une tres belle terasse on a aussi pu savourer le fromage de chevre je ne pourrai cité tout ce que j'ai pu voir c'etait une journée que je ne n'oublirai jamais je vous conseils vivement morocco desert travels la societe qui as organisé le voyage un tres bon service avec un tres bon pris
