Carol,
Please see the review that I left at the link you gave me. I very much hope we can host you in Boston one day. We have an extra bedroom in our home, and would love to have you.
Thank you for everything.
Julie
I booked an 11-day tour with Travel China Guide for me and my children, hoping for the very best. We had rarely relied on guided tours when traveling, but I didn't feel confident that I could replicate what I saw online, so I gave it a try. I was worried about the mix of people who would sign up for a tour, and the quality of the guides, but was reassured by the reviews I saw online. Travel China Guide surpassed all of my expectations. Wendy, who helped us plan our tour, was incredibly responsive and helpful. Tina, Carol, and Li, our guides in Beijing, Xi'an, and Guilin, were superb - warm, knowledgeable, and extremely capable. Tina made us feel right at home and welcome in a foreign country, Carol gave us a much deeper understanding of Xi'an, and Li did everything she could to show us the natural wonders of Guilin. (I felt terribly when I left a bag on a dinner cruise, but Li enlisted her husband to pick it up, so I had it back within 15 minutes.) I am grateful to all of them. I was also surprised how nice the hotels were, and how delicious the meals Travel China Guide arranged were. We signed up for a no-shopping tour and appreciated being steered away from untrustworthy vendors, and coached on how not to overpay.
After the tour was over and we moved on to Japan, I better appreciated how much Travel China Guide did for us. Our tour in China included two flights and one high-speed train. Our guides stayed with us through check-in, and picked us up at baggage claim, fitting in tours in the hours left in the day. In Japan we were on our own, constantly getting lost, and putting a lot of effort into planning each day. I missed having each day so perfectly planned for us, with an air-conditioned bus stocked with bottles of water waiting for us in the morning, and taking us back to our hotel at night.
We also really enjoyed getting to know the people in our group, including a French man who had traveled all over the world and joined us from Mongolia, an American who now teaches in Myanmar, another family with a boy my son’s age, and a group of 20-somethings from Alabama and LA that took my kids under their wings. The days were packed in the best possible way. There was also plenty of time to see each site and spend time with my family.
I think China Travel Guide is very, very reasonably priced for the experience we had. My only regret is that my parents couldn't join us. It was their idea to go to China, but my father got sick before the trip.
I had been to China once before ten years ago for work, and loved seeing how the country is changing, how welcoming everyone is, and how stunning China’s sites are.
