Parque Terra Nostra, Furnas, Portugal There has been a garden in the Furnas Valley for over 200 years. Seen from the top of the Pico do Ferro viewpoint, you can see that the “valley” is actually a crater, seven kilometres in diameter, and the last remains of an apparently long-extinct volcano.
The Furnas Valley became popular towards the end of the 18th century, due to the growing interest in the use of mineral water to treat health problems, such as rheumatism and obesity. Furnas has hundreds of small springs and streams, all with different properties. The Terra Nostra Garden is located in the midst of this magnificent water system. 60 minutes
Pico do Ferro Viewpoint, Furnas, Portugal This viewpoint is at an altitude of around 570 meters, at the elevation of Pico do Ferro. It offers an immense view over the vast volcanic crater of Vale das Furnas, Lagoa das Furnas stands out to the right of the viewpoint and the valley opens to the left.
It is also possible to observe the surrounding mountainous area. The passage through this viewpoint is part of the list of walking tours in the municipality of Povoação. 20 minutes
Vila Franca do Campo, Vila Franca do Campo, Portugal Vila Franca do Campo is a beautiful town, located in the wonderful island of São Miguel, in the Azores Archipelago, having been the island's first capital, created in 1444. Its place name derives from Vila Franca de Xira, located in the continent, as the village's founder, Vaz Botelho, was a proud Vila-Franquense.
The importance of the village dissipated with the violent earthquake of 1522, leaving a large part of the locality buried, perishing a few thousand people. 30 minutes
Lagoa das Furnas, Portugal Lagoa das Furnas is located in the parish of Furnas, in the municipality of Povoação, São Miguel Island. It has abundant vegetation and flowery landscapes that enchant tourists both for its beauty and for the peace of mind it transmits.
The Lagoon is surrounded by intense volcanic events, but there is nothing to worry about! Although there are 5 volcanoes considered active on the island, all are dormant, and the last eruption of the Furnas Volcano was in 1630.
On its banks, the traditional Cozido das Furnas (varied meats and vegetables cooked in a pan that is placed in the holes in the fumarole area and under the ground) are prepared. 60 minutes
Caldeira das Furnas, Furnas, Portugal Considered the ex-libris of the town of São Miguel, the Caldeiras of Furnas are certainly the most visited place in the entire Azorean archipelago, contributing, in a lot, to this attraction, the various phenomena of active volcanism found in this location.
Other attractions in this area are the sulfuric sludge and the huge amount of water sources there. Some hot, others temperate or even cold or gasified, sprout from inside the rocks, side by side, to the delight of tourists. It is Mother Nature's power to manifest with all her vigor.
Medicinal sludge is generally used for the treatment of respiratory tract disorders, especially those of the allergic background, infections of the circulatory system, gastritis, depression and nervous erectisms.
Largo das Caldeiras is a place of attraction par excellence. If in summer it tastes good to taste the famous corn cooked in the boilers, in winter this place does not fail to have its charms. 30 minutes
Miradouro de Santa Iria, Ribeira Grande, Portugal Located very close to the village of Porto Formoso, on the outskirts of the city of Ribeira Grande, the Miradouro de Santa Iria mirrors the green beauty of the magnificent São Miguel Island, in the Azores Archipelago, surrounded by the vast blue of the Atlantic Ocean.
From this viewpoint you can appreciate the beauty of the north coast of this wonderful island, which breathes a very unique environment, also marked by the vast tea plantations.
It is said that it was on these slopes that on August 3, 1831, the Battle of Ladeira da Velha was fought, when the troops of D. Pedro IV defeated those of his brother D. Miguel, opening the way to Concession of Évora Monte , which ended the Civil War of 1832/34, between liberals and miguelists. 30 minutes
