Review of Private Adelaide Hills Wine Region Tour
Pending review
We booked this tour about two days prior to arriving in Adelaide for our 5th Wedding Anniversary. I found Best Wine Tours just on a google search at the last minute, after a few weeks of research into the wine regions surrounding Adelaide and the companies that provide tours. Initially, we were looking at the hop-on hop-off tours, but in the end they just didn't feel like the right option for celebrating the occasion. John was quick to respond to my query and we had an itinerary and bookings set by the time we arrived. He was very clear in communications about what to expect and how the tours should run on the day for the best experience.
We chose an itinerary that was a combination of John's suggestions and our selections based on research of vineyards/cellar doors that suited our particular tastes in wines. John was amenable to our input, but I think you couldn't go wrong with a fully planned tour either.
He took care of all the included bookings as promised and on the day made sure we we stayed on time as best as possible. Usually, wine tasting for us is done while on family road trips with kids in tow and at places that often don't require bookings ahead of time. In the end, we only missed one of our tastings, but that's more because we got lost in the moment of being able to enjoy the wines without one of us having to be the designated driver!! We WERE a tincy bit tanked by lunch time...
We chose to start out tour a bit earlier than the usual at 9AM to get up to the hills as close to opening time for our first tasting as possible. We stopped at the Beerenberg Factory as a bit of a filler...but I must confess I am a bit of a "Beerenberger" at heart. Didn't have time for a factory tour though.
A quick run down of our wine tastings/recommends;
1. The Lane Vineyard - Estate Sparkling Blanc De Blanc, Rose, & Gamay
Worth the wine club membership just for regular deliveries of these
2. Artwine - All good wines, we had our favorites but can't go wrong if purchasing any of them. Joined the wine club here too...well worth it!! Nibbles platter with tasting was a nice touch and our server was knowledgeable and engaging.
3. Mt Lofty Ranges for Tasting/Lunch Combo - Same as Artwine for quality of the wines. Garry looked after us for the tasting...it was sublime experience and he went above and beyond to make sure we understood the depth of work that goes into the wines, both from the viticulture perspective and the wine making process. The set menu lunch was tasty too. We purchased a selection of our favorites but unfortunately didn't join the wine club here.
4. Ten Miles East - A little out of the way and hard to find, we discovered. We almost didn't get there due to my failure as a navigator...but I think John discovered a place he hadn't been before. A boutique winery, small selection of wines produced from alternative grape varieties. Red varieties were a little too heavy for us, but the whites were exceptional. The Arneis was the stand out for us. There was also a few locals hanging out in the sunshine enjoying a drop or two.
Overall, it was a great tour and well worth the price we paid. John was friendly and displayed excellent knowledge on the local wine industry and it's history, as well as on the areas we visited.
I would definitely book another tour of any of the SA wine regions with him in the future and would also recommend friends and family to do the same if they were planning a trip down that way.
Thank You for a wonderful experience John!!
