This walking tour unravels several decades of history – from pirate times and dungeons to modern mid century American “Fort Brooke” which housed a swimming pool and movie cinema for the troops. Perfect for all ages, this history walking tour will explore landmarks such as La Rogativa, the oldest square in Old San Juan, El Convento which is a former convent, briefly touch upon La Catedral de San Juan Bautista – Old San Juan’s venerated cathedral is Puerto Rico’s grandest religious building, and of course the city’s impressive defensive system: its walls and Castillo El Morro.

This was an excellent tour, led by Ricardo, an incredibly knowledgeable guide and chronicler, who in 2 hours was able to give us the perfect insight into the history of El Morro, the city of San Juan, this beautiful island, and the Spanish empire. Again, this was an excellent tour, you can book it with confidence.

This is a relatively new tour, and I highly recommend booking it if you plan to visit El Morro. Don’t wander El Morro aimlessly, pausing to read the placards. Our guide, Ricardo, is so much better of an experience because he takes you through the 500+ year old castle (not just a fort; he explained the difference between a fort vs castle) and points out features and shares historical events all with skillful storytelling. Ricardo is a history major, local history teacher, and finishing up a Master’s in history so his passion for the topic was evident when he answered our many questions. We saw the kitchen and heard what types of food would be cooked and how the soldiers lived on a daily basis; we learned how artillery evolved over time and what the most dangerous types were; why the English “owned” the castle for only 90 days; and the surprise that awaited invaders upon approaching El Morro’s drawbridge – and many other interesting historical facts that Ricardo shared, and I still remember a week later! It was a comprehensive overview of the six levels of El Morro that flew by in 2 hours. Thanks Ricardo for this tour that was a highlight of our trip!
