    Our first stop is Rosslyn Chapel. Scotland’s ‘best-kept secret’ has now achieved worldwide fame since the publication of ‘The Da Vinci Code’. An architectural gem, its superb stone carvings are still not fully understood. Further mystery surrounds the chapel and its association with the Knights Templar and Freemasonry. Many visitors leave with their own theory but all are amazed. The short walk through the glen to ancient Roslin Castle is also fascinating.

    Hadrian’s Wall is the best-known frontier of the Roman Empire and a magnificent reminder of one of the world’s greatest civilisations. Built almost 2000 years ago to contain the fierce Picts in Caledonia it stretches for 73 miles and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1987. You stop at Housesteads Fort in Northumberland National Park, the best preserved Roman fort along Hadrian’s Wall. Here you’ll enjoy a nature walk along one of the most dramatic and photographed stretches of the wall.

While driving from point to point on the itinerary, Alan, who was our Driver and Tour Guide, communicated the history and fun anecdotes about what we were seeing through the bus windows, and what we'd see on our stops. We were glad that ROSSLYN CHAPEL was our first stop because at 9:30 am it was still quiet, and we were able to be seated on the first docent-talk of the day. At lunch time, Alan drove us through the town of Melrose and pointed out the abbey, which we'd be able to visit on our own time, and the locations of a few lunch options. My husband and I bought a sandwich and made a picnic of it near the Abbey. Later in the day, to be at Hadrian's Wall was a spine-tingling experience! In additionlto these major sights, ti was interesting, as we drove through the beautiful Tweed Valley, to hear about its history.

My wife and I joined a small group in a comfortable wee red van led by exceptional guide Keith for Tour 3, which took us from Edinburgh down to Rosslyn Chapel, Melrose and into England to see Hadrian's Wall. We got lucky with the weather and the van made it easy to view the beautiful countryside. Along the way, Keith was both entertaining and very informative of the history, and we were able to enjoy extended stops at the different sites. It's a full day, and Keith made sure to provide enough bathroom stops along the way, while also providing some nice Scottish music at times while we gazed out at the scenery. Between the history and the beauty, and an excellent guide to lead the way, we can't recommend Heart of Scotland Tours highly enough! For us, it was an outstanding way to spend the last day of our visit to Scotland.
