The forest is best known for its kirks red colobus monkeys (kima punju in swahili), which are en- demic to Zanzibar. About 10 years ago, the monkeys were considered to be in danger of extinc- tion, but this trend has since reversed due to the conservation project. There are about 6000 red colobus monkey residing in Jozani Forest. After visiting the monkeys, you will walk across to the Pete-Jozani Mangrove Boardwalk, which entwines through coral thicket vegetation, mangrove forest and across a creek. You walk through mangrove forest which is extremely crucial to Zanzibar’s ecosystems, providing a habitat for many lizards, snakes and birdlife as well as preventing the coastal erosion.

    This is Jozani Forest (national park). First you will have a park ranger to guide you in the forest. You will see Red Colobus monkeys, but with a bit of luck, also other animals. There are also eucalyptus and mahogany trees to see. Then the tour continues to the nearby mangrove forest, where you walk through the wooden pathways and see the mangrove crabs.

I booked a private tour of Jozani Forest through their website. The company answered quickly all my emails and the booking process was very easy. Pickup at my hotel was on time. I had a driver and a guide, Fatima. Once at the forest, we did a forest walk and were looking for monkeys as well. Even though Fatima did a great job walking me around and explaining things, the forest in itself did not impress me that much. After, we drove not far to do the boardwalk, which I liked better. Fatima explained a lot about mangrove and I was able to see interesting things. Then as we were driving back, red colobus monkeys were spotted and I was able to get real close to them. I read afterwards that there is a minimum distance required to stay back from the monkeys (to avoid contaminating them with human diseases) but no one seemed to care about it (tourists and other guides). I would have liked for Fatima to warn me about this. In conclusion, I had a very good experience with this company and would use them again, but I would not go back to Jozani Forest, as I thought this was a bit underwhelming.
