Recreate some of the most famous scenes from The Fellowship of the Ring and make your social media streams go crazy! Then delve into the heart of Wellywood and visit the Weta Workshop, who created all the props, armour, weapons, costumes, miniatures and prosthetics for the Middle-earth movies. Learn the secrets of movie magic on a behind-the-scenes tour by a Weta employee, who will explain the creative process behind bringing these films to life. We really enjoyed our afternoon. We were picked up by Laura and alas, we were the only two on the tour (that's Covid for you! - hopefully things will pick up). We really enjoyed our tour - Weta Workshop is very interesting and our guide Emily was very enthusiastic. We also did the Thunderbirds tour which was one of the highlights for us. Laura then took us to Mt Victoria and showed us some LotR film locations and the scenes that were shot there - Laura was very friendly and knowledgable and made the afternoon an enjoyable one.

For any Lord of the Rings fans; I highly recommend doing a half day tour with Rover Rings Tour. We were picked up by Phil the very friendly and charismatic guide, who really knows his stuff not only about LOTR but also Wellington City. Firstly we were taken to the top of Mt Victoria Lookout and where Phil shared some interesting history facts about the city including earthquake history and he showed us where fault lines can be seen from the lookout. Then we headed to see a few filming locations where the LOTR Fellowship of the ring movie was shot - including a very well known scene: “Get off the Road”. All complete with amazing facts and stories about the movies from our guide - who clearly is a big fan of LOTR too! Some great photo opportunities here too. We then jumped back into the big comfortable van and headed over to the Weta Workshop in Miramar, all with great commentary facts from Phil on the way about the cast of LOTR, where other locations out of Wellington are and the NZ filming industry. We arrived at Weta Workshops, greater by some Cave Trolls. This is where all the NZ film magic happens. We got to see some great costumes, weapons, and other props used in many different films - not just NZ ones. We even managed to get a wee class in how to make things/props etc at home - which meant all Mr 7 wanted to do afterwards was stop at the shops to get some tin foil to make things back at the motel - Perfect! There’s a great gift shop at the workshop and the staff there know their stuff too! We finished off with a scenic drive through Oriental Bay on your way back to the city, all again commentated by Phil’s great knowledge of the area, including food recommendations and other activities. If your thinking of going on this tour, do it within your first or second day as it is a LOTR Tour, but it is also partly a guided tour of Wellington from a local! Thank you Rover Tours and a special thanks to Phil for your knowledge and charismatic friendly nature which definitely made the tour fun, factual, and with some great laughs on the way too! Great tour.. well worth the drive round the bays, and visiting the hobbit's wood. Weta was definately a highlight.
