This was a very disappointing excursion. We booked our tour through Otium tours…other agencies may have other itineraries.
The tour description claimed we would travel through “exotic landscapes” and “small villages”…in reality the route was basically along a few dirt roads among some small farms…nice enough but certainly not exotic….we passed a few small houses but nothing special in terms of really getting a flavor of typical Dominican life.
The first stop was an absolute tourist trap…it was described as a special place to learn about coca and coffee…the “demonstration” lasted less than 5 minutes and was nothing more than the presenter holding up a raw cocoa bean in the husk and then inviting us to sample some cocoa before turning us loose in the tourist shop. The staff of the tourist shop was extremely aggressive and the shop basically contained the normal junk you see everywhere.
Along with the tourist shop the location had what was billed as a relaxing swimming spa…in reality it is just a man made lazy river going into a small pool that has been fabricated to look like it was a natural feature.
The next stop of the tour was Macao Beach…that is a fabulous spot and should be on everyone’s list of places to go when visiting Punts Cana.
Then back along the same roads to where we started.
Our biggest issue with the excursion was that it was described as four hours in length. That was technically true (actually a little longer) but the 4 hours was from pickup at the hotel to drop off…it was approximately a 30 minute ride each way to/from the hotel…once we arrived at the buggy location it took about 30 minutes to get checked in and organized and after we returned it took another 30 minutes to wait for the truck to pick us up for the return to the hotel. The actual time driving the buggies was not more than 30 minutes…the bulk of the excursion was spent at the two stops (the first of which was completely ridiculous) and waiting around.
