We booked this cruise through an agent, not Doris Cruise direct. I will start from the start:
Picked up promptly from our hotel in a spacious small luxury bus and driven 2 hrs before stopping at a pearl farm for coffee and toilet break ( by the number of busses I am tipping everyone stops here)
After the break we were driven 10mins to Doris Cruise office. Staff greeted us and checked us into the cruise.
After a small wait in a crammed office we were ushered into a small tender boat (also appears everyone does this). The boat has hard timber seats and not really that comfortable. We are then informed this tender journey is approximately 45mins to the main cruise boat.
Once again, friendly and informative staff.
So by this stage my stomach is rumbling! We got picked up at 8am and it is now nearing 1:30pm (so I suggest pack snacks).
Arrive at the main boat and greeted by friendly staff. Taken straight up to the dining room for lunch. Now lunch! Lunch was 98% seafood, and not great seafood either. Most people were not impressed with the food and a lot went uneaten and discarded. We were served numerous dishes one at at time, many of these dishes required rice to accompany them. The rice was the very last dish delivered and by that time there was nothing to eat with it. Lunch was an epic fail. Luckily , clever ladies will approach your boat with a floating supermarket so snacks can be purchased.
Afternoon was relaxing and the cruise was good. Afternoon tea however was served at 6pm, one hour before dinner.
Dinner was buffet style and unlike lunch very pleasant. But be quick, as it appears food is not plentiful, once it runs out some things are not replaced. All drinks are seperate and a little expensive.
The boat also has a small pool/jacuzzi at the front. That was something we wanted, however you could not use it when you wanted to, there was set times.
Breakfast in the morning was nice, however do not expect a lay in and relax as it is served at 6:45am.
After breakfast back on the tender and out for an excursion to some caves. Very enjoyable.
After that back to the boat and check out of your cabin so they can clean and start the process again.
At 9:45 brunch was served. This again was like lunch on day one. Little eaten and much wasted.
After brunch back on the tender for the journey back to the office.
Waited a short time for out transport to arrive ( this was not the responsibility of Doris cruise! It was the agent)
Squeezed onto a small bus that a skinny Vietnamese man would struggle to fit in and driven back to Hanoi
So in summary:
Food 4/10
Service 9/10
Boat 6/10
Room 6/10
Boat is a little tired and rooms not spotless.
Was it worth it? Yes! Ha Long Bay is definitely worth a visit. Do your homework and pick the right cruise for you. I’m sure they vary, but it appears a lot do the same thing and it seems heavily geared to the Chinese market which borders very closely.
Time on the actual cruise boat is about 21hrs and it doesn’t go that far in that time.
It would seem from the review I didn’t enjoy it! I did enjoy it. People can read this and know what to expect
