Highlights: Outstanding service, fab food, great accommodation, wonderful guides!
I booked a five day mountain/desert trip for my family (two teenagers), my wife and I having seen these excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. However, we were still nervous – firstly about the location itself (heat, standards of cleanliness, potential upset stomachs …) and secondly what we could expect from local guides. Looking back, this was actually the highlight of our entire 12 day Morocco holiday, with NONE of those concerns being an issue.
Shortly before leaving we had to ask Omar if we could abandon the Mount Toubkal walk and do two day walks instead (health reasons) – he very quickly replied and was able to organise a different riad and different walks. Excellent service!
The two walks were led by Lahcen who obviously knew the area inside out, was at pains to go at our (very slow!) speed to ensure we got the best of the walks, supported us all, laughing and joking, throughout. Thank you *so* much Lahcen. Each walk was punctuated by a “lunch stop” – where Ibrahim (I think) had arrived earlier, set up mini-camp with fresh food and a burner, then cooked a three course meal for us, under the trees in the countryside! WOW!
We were also very pleased with the two riad’s we stayed in, in Imlil: they were very clean and welcoming, had everything we needed (including aircon!!! ????) and the food was excellent. During this time, Omar came to see us, to check that all was OK and see if there was anything more we wanted. Again, fabulous service.
The three day tour to the Sahara was carried out in a big MPV, drive and guided by Mohammed, lots of space for us and our luggage. It felt slightly awkward asking for the aircon to be put on each time, but I think that’s the difference between living there (and not noticing) and visiting. It’s a long 3 days, with lots of traveling, but the sights while driving and then at each stop make it well worth while. The teenagers found the driving slightly less interesting – one stuck on his downloaded Netflix (bring a portable phone charger!!!) and one sleeping for most of it. At the different stops there was little in the way of “hard sell” tours that we’ve had elsewhere. When we did visit the occasional shop, we could easily have walked away without buying – though we didn’t!! One stop in particular was fantastic – we’d asked about local rugs so Mohammed took us to a non-signposted, totally invisible family manufacturers. It was lovely sharing tea with the family and whilst it was a *slightly* hard sell, again we could have left without buying anything. Unfortunately (?) my wife fell in love with a rug …
The final bit before the long drive home was visiting the Sahara. This was incredible – riding across the desert on the camels, seeing the sunset (and rise again the next morning), the different colours of the sand as the light changed, struggling to stay on the camel (and feeling muscles you didn’t know existed …), the SUV drive back the next morning for those whose posteriors were suffering ... It was also the slight weakness of the tour. This is NOT Omar’s (or Mohamed’s) fault so has no impact on our review – it’s just for information. And none of it would stop us doing it again … Once we arrived at the “luxury” camp, there was no suggestion of organisation at all. Mint tea was provided (as everywhere) but no notice when dinner would be. Dinner itself was “OK”, but no better. No offer of drinks, no suggestion drinks were available – but they were if you asked. No wifi available and certainly no aircon (both explicitly mentioned on the organising hotel’s own website). We were hurried to finish our tea and head to a camp area for a “party” – but when we’d all got there we sat around waiting, not knowing what was going on, for about 30 minutes before anyone arrived. We were also told we had to be up for sunrise at 6.26 – but when we got up, there was no-one there suggesting where best we could go to see the sunrise. All of these should have been *much* better for a “luxury” camp – but wouldn’t take much to get them there!
Hindsight: we’d definitely recommend the entirety of this tour and have no doubts in recommending Omar’s company.
