Booked a 2 day trip to Cairo and Alexandria.Booking was easy and contact with Viator was quick however on the day of the trip we was packed up in a 15 seater mini bus and was the only English on the bus. Communication was more for the Russian quests and little carried out in English. When we arrived at the Old Market we waited for nearly 2 hours before we set off to Cairo. At Old Market we transferred to a coach, again very little communication about this and the guide was more geared to Russian and polish guests. Again we were the only English on the coach. When we arrived at the museum in Cairo we were left to find our English speaking guide and after 20 mins found him. He was brilliant (Ayman). Because it took us so long to find him our tour was a lot shorter than expected. He stayed with us the rest of the day and again kept us informed of what was happening. Eve trims we asked about our night accommodation, no one was able to give us an answer. Finally arrived at the House Boat, which was absolutely brilliant. The following morning we were picked up at 7am. Went to reception for our breakfast box but no one around to give it to us. On the way to Alexandria we picked up our guide and drove to Alexandria. Was taken to a couple of places and the onto the Linrary where we were told it was a treat and was able to take some pictures. We were then told we were going back to Cairo for our coach back to Sharm. We expected to go to the Gardens and Ampitheatre but didn’t get to see them. When we got on the coach, we found again, we were the only English on it. On the way back to Sharm the guide on the bus informed us when we arrive at Sharm we will have to find a taxi back to the hotel and pay for it. We told him that we had paid for the trip which included drop off at the hotel. His reply was “we are a different company and doing you a favour, you have to pay”. A while later we were then told he spoke with our agent and he misunderstood and a car will be waiting for us. Just before we got back to Sharm the guide informed us that he couldn’t get hold of the driver so will have to make our own way back. We arrived at the Old Market at 2.45am and was left on our own, basically dumped and left!! At that time in the morning there was no taxis around and stood on the road waiting for a taxi to pass. Eventually one arrived and we were taken back to the hotel. The following morning a messaged Viator and explained what had happened and requested a refund of the taxi fare. I did not ask for anything else. To this date I have had no response to this. Viator informed me the identified driver was in a car accident and in hospital. I sent our best wishes to him and his family. I also questioned why we didn’t see the places we had paid for and was informed that sometimes things change and the guide should have told us.
The trip we booked was a 60th birthday present and what we did see we enjoyed, however we expected to see what we paid for and Viator’s response was not acceptable. Viator told me to get in touch with them next time we want to book something and they would give me a discount. I totally understand that the accident was unforeseen but I also think that Viator and the companies they use could have better communication.
Based on our experience I would not recommend anyone to book the trip we did, and will not use Viator again. There are other companies that we have used before that have far better customer service.
