We booked the Etna South 3000m walk/hike
We took the cable car up to 2,500m (50 euro each unless you have a hotel discount! Then 85 for 2) and hiked the next 500m to within 300m of the summit.
It was April so warm and sunny on the coast and cloudy & chilly at around 2000m. We stayed at Hotel Corsaro which was perfect only a 5-8 min walk from where we met the guides (or you can park for two euros to the elderly gent).
There was uncertainty about being able to do the walk (altitude and terrain, despite being reasonably fit and having done long walks on peaks) but our guides (Vincenzo & Vincenzo) were reassuring. We absolutely loved our experience and despite some challenging conditions (snow & some strong wind) it was incredible and we’re so pleased we did it. Worth taking our walking boots (decent and worn in) and proper coats and also using the poles offered by the guide. They also offer boots/ coats if needed. We followed the email instructions to bring water (lots), high factor sunscreen (definitely put on), snacks etc. Thermals were essential for the time of year with the snow and ice.
We went inside a lava tunnel and saw steam rising from the rocks. Warm whisps of steam rose up and the lava rocks were warm, even hot, to touch.
The pauses to hear the stories from the guides were welcome and interesting. I was worried about descending which can be hard going (knees) and the steepest descent on sandy shale took concentration and then we took the path back to the cable car (v easy). Around 5 hours.
The guides managed the different abilities very well- albeit there was not such a wide difference to accommodate. If you can do a hilly walk over 7k you should be ok (excluding any medical / physical conditions).
The only minor delay was the very busy queue to buy our cable car tickets. With hindsight it was a trifle compared to the outstanding experience of achieving being on the living mountain just 300m from the summit.
