We just had a brilliant 3 hours with Dean, exploring parts of the island that even locals never visit.
We started with a beautiful walk in lush vegetation overlooking the sea front, providing some quite spectacular views. The array of plant life was fascinating and Dean had something to teach us about every plant. Whether it was informing us about how the plant, the roots or the fruit could be eaten, how it could be used for medicinal reasons or a story from Deans childhood, we learnt so much.
We moved into the grounds of a 38 acre estate which used to be private but is now open to the public. This was like walking through a forest, with enormous trees and a fascinating story about the history of this estate.
Finally we walked through a section of the Railway Trail, something we had always wanted to do and it didn’t disappoint, as we got to explore the more residential areas of Bermuda.
Dean is extremely passionate about his island and the history of it. He passed this passion onto us in such an authentic and humorous way, we were hooked on his every word.
This is a great way to get off the beaten path as the name suggests and to see beautiful parts of the island you wouldn’t otherwise see, while learning about parts the islands history and vegetation that you can’t find in books.
