I had an equipment malfunction about 40-50 minutes into the dive - the air flow from the cylinder suddenly stopped. I nearly drowned but was able to get access to a fellow diver's octopus just in time. Matjaž Repnik, the dive instructor, then helped me surface.
While I was thoroughly disoriented and having a brain fog, and wheezing because of water in the lungs, he asked me to fill up my BCD using my breath since the cylinder air supply wasn't working. When I couldn't comply, he says repeatedly and angrily - "Where did you buy your PADI certificate from?", implying that I haven't really done the course. Not one question about if I'm ok. Then he directs me to swim to the shore and wait while he and the two others in our party finish the dive. I was literally coughing up water and blood by myself on the shore. Even the other divers in our party were appalled and one kind soul insisted on swimming ashore with me. Later when we had an ugly confrontation, this prick of an instructor justifies his rude comment by claiming he knows "how things are done in Asia".
There was sufficient air in my cylinder when I surfaced, so that wasn't the problem. The instructor claims that I didn't fully open the cylinder's air valve, which I admit may have just been the case, though I think it unlikely because there was no problem for most of the dive. Whether the malfunction was my fault or the equipment's, nothing justifies this behaviour.
Unbelievable experience. I'm complaining to PADI and Slovenia Tourism about this guy's behaviour, I hope something comes out of it.
The dive site itself is unique and I enjoyed the dive thoroughly before the almost-drowning.
