One of the highlights of our trip! Learned so much and saw such amazing sights! The actual experience differed in many important ways from the description here, though—some good, a couple for the worse. Let’s start with the name of the group…it’s not Polestar anything, it’s Night Skies Tenerife (not to be confused with Dark Skies Tenerife which met at the same sunset spot (Mirador de los Poleos)). And let’s get the other big negative out of the way—this is by no means a “private tour” where “only your group will participate”. Ours (on albeit a perfect night following a cancelled one) was about a dozen…in fairness, the other tour (Dark Skies) was about 50., so 12 was nice.
Now to the positive variances. The sunset tour start time wasn’t 8 or 8:30, it was 6:30, which works out much better for actually seeing a sunset. We were done by about 8:45 (was chilled to the bone by then but so fascinated by the astronomy it was hard to tear ourselves away).
Speaking of astronomy, the write up says we will use the large computerized telescope to look at the moon. While true, people should know it’s also used to look at galaxies, nebulae, planets, and clusters. These guys are SERIOUS astronomers, but with a superb knack for explaining to the layman.
The guys were also kind enough to recommend a better-weather night than our original booking, and it was perfect.
