Need insect repellant. Would be appropriate to wear swim wear as will get wet.
Fantastic guide, very knowledgeable and friendly. Spoke good English. Relaxed and did not rush you around.
Fantastic experience!!!!
This is a sad review to have to write, but Gaby at Wayak Tours stole $420 from us.
This is not just a bad experience; it is a safety issue and it is a crime.
We arrived on time, and had arranged with Gaby to store our luggage in a locker for $125 MXN. We decided this would be more affordable than what we’d originally planned, which was to drop our bags off at our airbnb and then go to the meeting point for kayaking.
Gaby then offered to drive us to downtown Cancun after our kayak tour for another $250 MXN, which would be cheaper than an uber, so we said yes. Then she said we should store our bags in Axel’s car instead. We asked if it was safe and she assured us it was. Nonetheless, out of caution, I took a quick video and photo of Axel bringing my boyfriend’s suitcase to the car and of his license plate.
My boyfriend needed to change his clothes and I was a little anxious about timing. At that point, Gaby asked if we were paying with cash or credit.
Here’s where it got messy. I admit that in my mind at that moment, I may have had an early senior moment and mixed up the kayak tour, which I’d already paid $76 USD for on Trip Advisor, with a day-long tour to Chichen Itza we had planned for the next day, which was AWESOME and totally worth it, which was going to cost us $420 total in cash.
Because I felt rushed and anxious, I told my boyfriend, “It’s $420.” He thought for a moment that I had just crazily booked a really overpriced kayak ride, but he rolled with it and he literally COUNTED OUT $420 USD TWICE in front of Axel and Gaby, who was watching, then handed it to Gaby, who took it and said nothing.
We then had our kayak ride, which was fine, even though the photos are some of the worst photos I’ve ever seen. Then Axel drove us to downtown Cancun, with Gaby in the passenger seat.
When we got to our airbnb, I asked Gaby about payment for the car ride, and she said not to worry about it, which was weird since she’d quoted us $250 MXN earlier.
When we got inside and began to think of the next day, I suddenly realized my huge mistake. I started texting and calling Gaby on WhatsApp repeatedly and she was ignoring me. It was soon enough that they would have only driven 5-10 minutes away and could have turned back.
I then noticed that she had gone back and DELETED WhatsApp messages (see attached message) that said the $125 was in MXN - and I now think this was in an effort to cover up stealing from us. There’s no way she thought we were giving them over a $300 tip in USD for a $76 tour.
She finally answered and said I was confused and we’d only given her $20 USD for “a locker and a dry bag.” (See photo.) We had not used a locker since we put our stuff in Axel’s car (see photos) and we had not rented a dry bag because I had my own (pictured here.) Gaby had even commented that she liked it and had never seen a white dry bag before.
I wrote back saying this was not true, and she may have been making a mistake herself (trying to still give her the opportunity to do the right thing.) I even said she could send $360 and consider the rest a tip. She ignored all my further messages.
I then contacted Wayak, whose website is fake and doesn’t even exist, through Trip Advisor. They also insisted I had rented a locker (clearly not) and went so far as to say that if Axel offered us a ride and we accepted it, that was our choice - when Gaby was the one who said they offered a ride service for a fee.
Then we contacted Trip Advisor, who escalated our investigation. They contacted the company and got back to me saying they could not secure a refund. I don’t want a refund. I want the $420 that was stolen.
Trip Advisor will be refunding me the $76, they said. But that is not nearly enough to cover the theft by a company Trip Advisor is “advising.” They are responsible for the unethical behavior of the companies they vouch for.
Gaby knows what she did and that’s why she started deleting WhatsApp messages and ignoring me. I don’t know if Axel knows, and I honestly hope he doesn’t, but if he does, he’s complicit, too.
We will be contacting the Mexican police to file a report of theft, and if Wayak or Trip Advisor does not return our $420, we will be pursuing legal action against them.
