To celebrate our wedding anniversary, we traveled from our home in the United States to Senegal. We are so grateful that our travel agent connected us with Continent Tours. Our itinerary (from September 25 to October 1, 2024) was tailored to our interests in culture, history, and religion.
It was our first trip to Africa. We learned so much from our kind tour guide, Abou Pouye, who knows a million facts and stories about Senegal, West Africa, and beyond. To see Senegal through his eyes opened our hearts to carry a spirit of this country inside us forever.
Our driver, Ibou, was skillful, happy, and reassuring. Through some flooded streets in Dakar, crowded roads in market towns, and busy highways in between, Ibou's driving was stellar.
At the Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar, we learned why Africa is truly the cradle of humanity. Our tour also included the Africa Renaissance Monument, Goree Island (a slave-trading center in the 15th-19th centuries with the haunting Door of No Return), Pink Lake, the Great Mosque in the holy city of Touba, Shell Island, Saly, and the Somone Delta.
We felt sad to leave Senegal, land of the lion and the sacred baobab tree, a place where rainfall is a blessing because water is mercy. We encourage all travelers, especially our fellow Americans, to visit Africa with Continent Tours. Peace be with you. -- Linda and Paul Pompili
