CALABRIA
I visited Calabria last year in summer.
I know southern Italy quite well, as I have already travelled there and visited some cities there. I like their authenticy, their love for life, tempermanet and of course many natural beauties. I decided for a one week holiday. Of of my goals was a santuary Santa Maria dell'Isola, that is located in the cityof Tropea. There are quite some steps leading to the santuary. More then anything it offers many stunning views to the beautiful beaches and the look to the sea in all directions.
When I arrived to the local hotel, the owner of the place said to me that the local vulcano Stromboli has erupted again. This is not a coincidence, I replied as we are in a vulcano area, and I wanted to see it. Well instead of this I landed in local thermae!
The charming Calabria is normaly conected to sunny beaches, while the admirerers of excursion tourism come here every year and look for new discoveries and experiance. In fact this place is a real balsam for reseaching culture and the history of regions.
One of the most picturesque fisher places is Pizzo Calabro. There is also a church Piedragrotta, that is located on a rocky coast and is worth visiting.
Today the main economic activity in this region is tourism.
HISTORY:: The history mentiones the heroes that 900 before the fall of Troya came from Siria into there places, and their descendant Italo, by which Italy got its name. History also says that there lived a tribe Bruci, that the tribes has to get away, as the country was invaded by Greeks, that here established the colony Magna Grecia. The arrival of Romans in the trird century has taken the Greek colony the power and economic independence, but it couldn t take away the culture, that the Greeks have left.
The famous Greek past has left its consequences. Also today in Calabria they speak the language, that is called »Grecano«.
After the Romans, the Byzantins come to the power, later on the Langobards and in 1061 the Normans. The country was then connected to Napoletan kingdom and it was under the govermant of Habsburg, Spanish, Austrians and Bourbones, an for a short period also the French.
As elswhere in southern Italy, aslo in Calabria there is a mafia organisation active and it is called Ndrangheta. Fortunarely I didn' t have anything to do with it.
Worthe visiting is a place called Tropea. It is a city on Costa dei Dei (The coast of Gods), from there you can see many beautiful small crystal clear waters. Tropea is a well known Calabria place. The way from the main airport Lamezia to Tropea last about one hour. There are prestigious restaurants in Tropea, hotels, and camps. Close to the city centre there is also a Benedictine santuary.
We can walk along the white sandy beaches and there we can smell a famous sweet Calabria onion.
Worth visiting are also the places Pizzo, Soverato, Capo Vaticano,..
From Calabria you can visit a beautiful place Taormina in Sicily my the Ionian sea. You can admire the look to the vulcany Etna and Giardini Naxos…
Another trip you can do from Calabria is a trip to Eolian islands, that are avout 100 km from Calabria. You can get there with the ship from the ports of Reggio in Vibo Valentia. The Eolian islands are among the most beautiful natural beauties of Mediterranean. There are islands: Lipari, Stromboli and Vulcano, the last two are active vulcans they have the most beautiful looks and beaches and a picturesque landscape.
CALABRIAN FOOD
If you are in Calabria, don t forget to try Filea, that is a special tiny sort of pasta, that is prepared with the meat sauce »nduje sauce« and it typical for Calabria region. It is absoultely necesarry to try it with the glass of wine, for example calabrian wine Ciro. Try the cheeses Caciocavalli and Pecorino or Sopressata and also sweet honey Cudduraci and Scalidde!
