Pleasant and informative experience.
The tour started in front of the train station in Reims. We were picked up in a comfortable minivan and driven on the main road to a small village in the outskirts of Eperney. Along the way a very informative presentation was done in a relaxed and friendly manner. We then arrived at the operation base which was a small family run champagne house. There we were given instructions on the use of e-bikes and off we went.
The e-bikes made the experience so much more pleasant. We navigated small, steep paths within vineyards with relative ease. Several stops were made along the way describing the grapes themselves, the process of growing and harvest, pressing, primary and secondary fermentation, disgorgement, and addition of sugar. Descriptions were always fun and hands on. Our guides Perrine and Alvaro made sure everyone stated within the group and all questions were addressed. We ended up visiting the Abbey where the tombs of Dom Perignon was. There were several other stops along the way to taste the grapes and take pictures before and after. A bit later we visited a very small family run Champagne house where the owner (with the same family name as the label) explained her products and offered a 3 glass tasting.
We then descended the hills and pedaled along a very flat road by a canal, arriving back at the base of operation where a 3 course lunch with champagne and wine was served. It was a very tasty lunch provided at a very friendly environment.
The guides did a great job of explaining a lot more than just Champagne. At the end, we left with a great appreciation for the process and many recommendations as to how we can enjoy the rest of our visit.
