When you get to Athens use the taxis from the airport. Always insist on the meter because you will find that many will not use the meter and give you outrageous prices, especially in the heart of Athens. Although illegal, we encountered many instances of this practice under the noses of the police. We were lucky enough to get Panos from the airport. Panos speaks amazing great english, is young and very personable and we got his number which we then used extensively. He was there to help us move our bags to another hotel for storage and for trips to the cruise and the trips to the airport. His number is (0030) 6932538005.
Athens: Highly highly recommend getting a guide before you go. We searched hard and found that almost all of the guides we would choose had been contracted already. Luckily for us Stefanos had an almost last minute cancellation. A trained archeologist Stefanos took our group of six on an amazing odyssey showing us exactly the right spots, the amazing architecture and explaining the history and dynamics of the different sites and cultures in a fun and interesting exchange. He blew past the time we had agreed on without hesitation. He can be found on ToursByLocals.
We did a luxury tour to Delphi. The guide to Delphi became a friend and the guide they arranged in Delphi was also amazing. I can give details if you PM me. The company was Athens Private Tours.
We did Rhodes with Manos Sabanis. Amazing guy and the part of Rhodes we were in is not, according to BBC World News, affected by the fires. His site is manosgoing.com
We did a tour from Bodrum to Ephesus. We used ToursByLocals. Atilla was fantastic and knew all the rights places to be and see. Do see the recent house(s) excavations. It is an extra entry charge but well worth it!
We were a party of three couples age ranges 31 to 68, all fairly fit.
