Three generations of my family, including my 12-year-old grandchildren, visited Washington, DC from Los Angeles, CA in July 2023. Our tour of Mount Vernon with Kenneth Roberts of Luxury Tours of Mount Vernon, was marvellous! There is so much to see at Mount Vernon. It was an enornous plantation! As you walk the grounds and look into the buildings, you understand viscerally that this was once a town-- a town populated and operated by enslaved people. Ken, who used to be a historian at Mount Vernon, provides an unforgettable experience.
The day we went was hot and humid -- July!-- so it was very smart that we went early. After taking in a wealth of information, we all had lunch together at the lovely old Mount Vernon Inn, right on the premises. After lunch ,we visited the section of the plantation where the enslaved people were buried . It was very moving.
Finally, we visited the brewery where George Washington made money making whiskey. It proved to be lucrative.
The tour, with Ken as guide ,was unforgettable!
