Lucha Libre-Erlebnis in Mexiko-Stadt

Fun evening, we were first taken to a local pub like venue with live music, opportunity to dance and tried pulque (fermented agave drink) and beer. After that we went to the arena to watch some Lucha libre. You can leave anytime once you get to the arena.

While I'm not a wrestling fan, I've always wanted to see lucha Libre. It did not disappoint. My wife was nervous, particularly after reading the comments of the area of Arena Mexico being sketchy. After walking there and back from 222 Reforma area we are not sure why anyone thought that. At worst some of the streets aren't fully lit: perhaps the darkness makes some nervous. The guide (Alex) was great with a lot of luchadore energy, without being overbearing. Arena Mexico was a lot of fun. A small, intimate Arena, and we had great seats. Hilarious, over the top antics in the ring, and while raucous, not really too loud. There were 3 bouts, and about the right amount of time to get your fill of luchadores without being tedious. Of course it's largely predictable and silly, but just when your attention might wander they would pull out some ridiculously acrobatic or villainous move, and I couldn't help laughing. The three villains curb stomping the poor hapless hero Mistico, only to be saved by the midget in the green chicken suit with a flying drop kick from outside the ring. On the return, as you leave the stadium, you pass a gauntlet of mask vendors. It was delightful. They are the iconic pieces of art, with a mind boggling array of selection. Part of the appeal of Lucia Libre for me is the authentic expression of emotions, and, accurate or not, the amazing variety of spectacular masks pushes back against the strangling tentacles of corporate monoculture. Loved it.

If you're not going to see lucha libre, then what are you doing with your life? AMAZING! FUN! We booked this excursion through Tripadvisor and was very impressed by the guides from the meeting point to the bar, and then to Arena Mexico for lucha! Worth EVERY PENNY, this is a must when visiting CDMX! We were fortunate enough to go on Dia De Los Muertos which was spectacular. GO MISTICO!
