My wife are here in Madrid for a few months visiting from the United States. Flamenco is strongly entrenched in my Família. Both my Grandmother and mother are from Granada, Spain and both danced processionally Flamenco and later in the USA, my mother danced with Jose Greco who popularized Flamenco in NYC in the United States late 1950’s then later danced with the New York City ballet. Flamenco is a very soulful, heartfelt and passionate rhythmic of sounds, dance and beat. This show reflected much of this and the artistry of movements, flamboyance of costumes, wonderful sounds of traditional castanets, incorporating movements at times of ballet by one of the Bailaora’s, and good flamenco foot work, elements much appreciated to see! Perfect pitch and sounds from both Tocador y dos Cantaores flamencos! Bravo!
This dance group performed excellent, they have a very short time before they begin the show to give the audience an introductory brief history of the art of Flamenco and the great performers of past History before they actually begin, maybe this intro could be given in a handout before the show in order to give more time to the actual performance.
The intro is good but lacking the very essence how Flamenco originated, dance moves from other cultures, the Gypsy Gitano history, there is so much more to Flamenco to cover it in a five minute video before a show, perhaps you could have a book on the history of Flamenco sold in your gift shop. People of real interest will buy this book, just a suggestion.
The show has to move along to fit into their one hour time slot, we were left wanting more, I wanted to feel the “Duende” but at times felt a bit choreographed, the dance group relaxed into their performance before the time was up, there is only so much you can do within the hour, but my wife and I were wanting more, however it was fantastic once the performers settled in, the male dancer finally hit his stride at the end, we were so hoping to see this much earlier in him, he actually made eye contact when I voiced Venga to him while he was doing fantastic foot work and then it was like magic he lit the entire room up. This was something we hoped to see in the entire performance.
At the beginning of the performance you had an announcement on your video to kindly ask No video or photos during the performance so the performers don’t have to look through our lenses to connect to us but see our eyes direct? The entire show it seemed like all performers were staring past or above us and never really connecting with anyone in the audience, I feel this was a huge missed opportunity to engage with us emotionally bringing us the audience into your “Duende” this could of been magical. The dancer with the castanets stole the show, she communicated beautifully through rhythmic sounds and hand gestures it was poetry in motion!
Side note- personal feedback, it would be so nice to offer a more personal approach to audience members since this is a very intimate small venue to perhaps meet the performers briefly after the show to say “Thank you” in person and perhaps have a photograph taken even if this would be for a increased fee or included in VIP ticket sales. We sat front row and thanked the stage manager after the show,, “ He was so welcoming and nice to us” he may remember us the Military looking guy and his wife at the 9pm show Sunday 10/19/ who sat us center front row, the biggest disappointment while thanking him for such a great show, one of the female dancers pictured below walked by my wife and I twice while we were showing our appreciation to him, we turned to her both times and In Spanish thanking her for such a beautiful show and trying to compliment her, she completely ignored us and walked by two separate times? Unfortunately this was our leaving last impression?!
El espectáculo de flamenco fue fantástico y hay mucho talento para disfrutar aquí en Madrid, ¡gracias por una velada maravillosa!
