Once we got on shore, met our driver and headed to the volcano. As nothing is close to the port, it takes 1.5 hours to drive each way but traffic can extend this. Once at the national park, we met Claudio to guide us on the hike. This is clearly a strenuous activity, so judge your fitness level appropriately. There are horses to help, at an additional cost. The climb did get steeper as you went higher, but nothing that made it unsafe. Great views along the way plus getting to the summit is wonderful. You can easily see the differences in lava flow from different years. After getting to the top, you can stay here or go further to climb down to hardened lava fields. This was tougher, but also more rewarding. Take your time on this part, then enjoy roasting marshmallows from the heat coming from below. When going back downhill, it was easier, but still strenuous as we were tired from the initial climb. Claudio stopped whenever we needed a breather, pointed out various sights and answered questions on what we were seeing and the area we were climbing. Round trip hiking was 3 hours, total from the pier was about 6.5 hours. Great time and well worth the effort for memories of a lifetime.
