Great Tequila Tour Day Trip From Guadalajara. Be prepared for lots of tequila and fantastic views of agave fields.
We Booked this excursion through Trip Advisor, which worked fine. The tour company is GDL Adventure. Clean, comfortable 15 person vans. Professional and fun driver (Charly) contacted us the morning of the tour via WhatsApp to arrange pickup from our hotel, which was not on their list of regular stops but they picked us up with no issue. Pickup was around 10:00am.
First stop was Don Valente Tequila distillery, a small batch producer. Five pesos for entry, which gets you a shot glass for the free tastings and a tour of their very small factory.
Second Stop was at nearby Don Elias, a much larger operation, they export around the world. Feels a lot like a Napa winery tour. Prices at both are better than in the US.
Third Stop, lunch at Los Alzados on the way to the town of Tequila. Great food, very reasonable prices. We had Carne Asada Shrimp Tacos, a beer and a coke for about $23 US dollars.
Fourth stop (for about an hour) at a photo op roadside bar with a Mariachi band and a bar that serves a traditional Mexican drink called Cantarito, which is tequila (of course) a few different citrus juices, grapefruit soda pop served in a clay pot. This bar is right next to an agave field with the Tequila volcano in the distance.
The last stop was the town of Tequila, which is mostly a tourist trap. The main attraction is the Jose Cuervo distillery. The main town square is full of drink shops, souvenir shops, tour guides, and tour busses in the shapes of chili peppers, barrels, and tequila bottles. If the church is open, it’s worth a look inside.
Some reviews have said the time in Tequila isn’t long enough. We were there for an hour and a half which was more than enough for us.
The drive back to Guadalajara was about an hour, we were back at our hotel around 7:00pm.
Overall a fun way to spend the day. The tour company was great, highly recommend.
