We went to San Diego to baby sit my son's dog! Yes. He had to go to Illinois with his serious girlfriend to be with them on Christmas. So we took 10 days went out there.
He lives in Chula Vista (south of San Diego working for the Feds. Nice area - expensive to live in CA - Gas $4.50+/gallon. Tons of electric cars too. We are from FL. Not used to the high prices for things.
We travels Julian - great little town - recommend going there (look the town up and see what they are known for). Apple Pie is the "draw" but the town like all touristy towns have the typical "gift" shops. We didn't spend a long time there but it was worth the drive (roughly 1 hour) . The drive up was the best - we were on some winding roads and past through some other little places. We had to start out on a highway but got off in Descanso.
We also went to Temecula - about 1.5 hours away one day. We took back roads and were impressed with drive we had - good roads that were well kept, nice houses, barns, etc. Driving was great given the people on the roads with us were mentally sane. Drove around and all that is really there is wineries. Not like Napa by no means but nice. We got to see our first Trans person. He as bald, had a beard, a mu mu on and 4 inch pink shoes! We don't see them in FL where we live. It was like seeing rare animal in the wild while out site seeing in the woods.
We also went to Coronado to see the sea lines - besides the smell, it was a great seeing them and the surfers out there. Walked round the town had a great breakfast - food has been great wherever we went. In all these places - pick anything and you won't be disappointed. I spent time while in the service at LA Air Station years ago and as in the case there - you have to find mexican restaurants that aren't chains or huge - their food is the same as if you were in PA - not real. We drove around till we found Mexican-Americans or in many cases Mexicans who were going in and out of places - hole in the walls.. Go to these or don't have Mexican food.
The people we ran into through out our trip were very friendly.
I didn't get a chance to go to the Navy Seals Museum but will on the next trip we when we visit. Next trip will be to North CA and see Redwoods, etc.
I will say we are sorry to hear about CA's fires - I know those areas well from my past. Even back when the Government out there wasn't taking care of their forests - more conserved about fish, and small animals - sad because people just vote for the wrong people. We wish them the best.
