Josuel was responsive and accommodating of my shrimp allergy (shrimp is in many foods in Bahia, beware!) right from the beginning. He's super friendly and easy to talk to and so inviting with his way of opening Bahian culture and history. He took us to the Feira de São Joaquim, which would have been completely overwhelming but was instead fascinating under his gentle guidance. He's not talking all the time but allowing us to explore and pointing out some curiosities. Back at his house, we made moqueca together and ate it and drank some wine while talking about education in Brazil (he's also a public school teacher). His Portuguese is quite understandable, and he also speaks English. He's been a guide for 20+ years here and it is apparent. He really knows this place and our experience was richer for his knowledge. Great way to spend a few hours in a new city!!!
