We had the most wonderful time! Our tour was with Francesco: I used to live in Florence, and this is probably one of the only things that I would put at the very top of the list for a Florence newbie. It was such an excellent food tour on multiple levels. Francesco has a true understanding of food, wine and the local merchants--and his harmonious partnerships with all of the local restaurants and food shops is evident as you move through the tour.
This was truly special, in that you actually receive a tour of some of the local food and drink pairings--and authentic explanations about local food combinations, dos/don'ts, and the history of particular products and traditions. The portion that moves through the market is just excellent! I loved our stop when Francesco spoke about organ meat, and the Florentine tradition of never wasting anything--to me, that made a great deal of sense within context.
We tasted everything from divine cantucci (paired with vin santo) to organ meat to caffe leccesse in the back of an I-shall-not-reveal-the-name hidden gem--where I would have coffee every day, if I still lived in Florence. (The fact that it is just up the way from La Menagère, but is ten thousand times everything that La Menagère is not, is kind of poetic. My goodness...what a great coffee spot!)
I absolutely love to cook...and am pretty crazy about public markets/food markets within the US and around the world. (Pike's Market, La Boqueria and the Florence Market are all up there!) This tour was truly fabulous in moving us throughout the market itself; we were full and in great company all throughout. My favorite part (and my husband's favorite part) was when we went to a magical liquor store in San Lorenzo--and then went into the back to eat piles of beans (straight out of the peapods and the plastic bag itself) paired with ridiculously fresh Pecorino and a really excellent red. Francesco was so thoughtful in his interactions with us, as well as a young boy on our tour, and the entire morning/afternoon was beautifully-paced...and completely delicious!
We are deeply grateful for this experience. It was one of the biggest highlights of our trip, and is honestly one of my favorite things I have ever done in Florence, over the course of many years/many visits. Thank you for such a wonderful memory!
