Nowadays, Bucharest is a nice city to live in, with a blooming culinary scene, hipster neighbourhoods and impressive architecture. However, in the eighties the living circumstances were quite worse. Explore the city with a local guide and learn how life in Bucharest used to be in times of communism.
About this tour
You will start the tour at Revolution Square, here you can see many monuments that played an important role in the turbulent past of the city. You can find the Royal Palace, the Atheneum and the University of Bucharest Library here. You will continue the tour to one of the biggest examples of communism: The People's House. Historic neighbourhoods have been destructed to build this controversial, colossal house of parliament. You will ascend to the roof and you will have a gorgeous view of the city from up here.
Next you will have a short break to taste a covrig, a traditional Romanian pretzel. After this, you will visit a neighbourhood in the East of Bucharest and you will visit a so-called "Hunger Circle", a canteen from the communist era named due to the food shortage in that time. On your way you will make a stop at the Romanian Television HQ, which mainly aired communist propaganda. To show the big difference you will then visit the neighbourhood Primaverii, one of the most expensive neighbourhoods of the city where many politicians and local celebrities still live. You will end the tour at Victory Square.
