I've been to many places in Europe but there are none that compare to Transylvania, which has to be one of the best kept secrets on the continent.
From the moment you're picked up by Marius and the team, you can tell you're about to experience something special.
There's the trip from Bucharest up through the mountains to the vibrant town of Brasov, which is worth the visit by itself. There's a real buzz about the place, and there is something for every taste. For me, the local beers and the food were just the ticket.
Brasov is just the base though, as you're there to follow in the footsteps of Vlad Dracula himself. Bran Castle sits guarding the pass through the mountains near Brasov, and has done so for nearly 8 centuries. It's historic, fascinating, wonderfully gothic and just a little bit creepy into the bargain!
But what really puts the icing on the tour cake, is Marius and the team. Nothing is too much trouble; they all speak excellent English and very soon, you feel like you're being guided around by a friend.
So if you're looking for something that's just 'different' then I can't recommend this trip highly enough. But as to the question of whether to go out after sundown? You'll just need to answer that one by yourself....
