You will discover the amazing story of the rise to power of the Romanian communist party and the unparalleled cult of personality of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. You will learn how Ceausescu’s craving for applause and recognition led to his overturn in the most violent anti-communist revolution of 1989. On a tour full of contrasts you will see a communist district built for the elites and one designed for regular working-class families, and learn about day-to-day life during communism, the economy, the propaganda, the relationship with religion. You will explore the New Civic Center and the exterior of the Palace of Parliament and learn about the achievements of Romanian architects, but also the sacrifices for the local community as the old architecture changed so much during the 1980s. You will also have an honest conversation about the present-day socio-political movements in Romania and its future as a member of the European Union. You will finish the walk near the old town.

We enjoyed our tour with Elena. She met us at our rented apartment and we took the Metro together to get downtown. She helped us to understand the history of Romania over the last 100 years - focusing on the impacts of the communist regime. She shared photos with us which helped us comprehend some of the changes which occurred. We covered a lot of ground - but were not rushed - we even had a few rest stops! I’d recommend that you book a private tour with Elena. She can share with you in the first person as her family lived through the experience of the communist regime and it’s impacts.

Elena brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to this well organised and informed tour of the main communist era sights in Bucharest. She combined a personally friendly and approachable style with excellent factual informaron and visits which were off the beaten track. I fully recommend her walking tours.

It was an amazing tour, Elena it not only a super nice person but also she knows soooo much about the history that we could not do a single question in which she did not know the answer! It was very interesting to hear all the stories about the communist times, especially by someone who dominates the theme! I have done a bunch of other tours in my life but this was one of the best by far
