At the destinations, you will visit the ancient Debre Libanos Monastery (and its cave church), the famed ‘Portuguese Bridge’ built in the 1890s, the Nile Gorge with its abundant endemic birdlife and gelada baboons and enjoy a view of Addis Ababa from a viewpoint set at 3,300 meters above sea level (Entoto Mountain). Please note spotting the Gelada Baboons can be a matter of luck, as they live in an open park.

    Founded by Ethiopian Saint Abune Tekle Haymanot, within a steep riverine canyon in 1284, Debre Libanos later became the political centre of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and is where Emperor Lebna Dengal received the first Portuguese mission to Ethiopia in 1520. The Italian army destroyed the original church in a 1937 massacre that claimed the lives of 800 monks, deacons and lay worshippers. The modern church, its domed roof decorated with stained-glass windows, remains an important pilgrimage site.

    Although the locals believe the stone-arch Portuguese bridge was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it was actually built in the 1890s by Ras Darge in the old Portuguese style. The narrow span makes a spectacular picture and the gushing (in the rainy season) cascade just below it is very impressive.

    You will see the Jemma River Gorge, which is the stating point for the African Great Rift Valley and is one of Ethiopia’s most dramatic stretches of road that starts its serpentine descent to the bottom of the Blue Nile Gorge, 1km below. The gorge is accessed by a road that offers spectacular views, and a pair of bridges cross the river.

A wonderful day out. Highly recommended, fun to get out of Addis, learn more about Ethiopia and the culture and see some beautiful nature. The drive itself was also fun. Nico and Joseph were both really polite, helpful and knowledgeable, enjoyable people to spend the day with. The trip is well worth it!

We had a 13 hour layover in Addis Ababa and decided to book this tour for the day for our group of 4 with private transportation. Initially our tour guide Emanuel had been given the wrong itinerary which consisted of a coffee ceremony and a trip to the local market. This was not what we had booked and had to correct the tour guide and he made a phone call to the agency which corrected their error. We drove through a crowded city and took a long and bumpy unkempt road through the countryside to get to Debre Libanos monastery (3 hours). We toured the monastery and was there for under 1 hour. We headed back and stopped at the Portuguese Bridge. The view there was nice overlooking the valley but to get there can be quite challenging for the elderly or physically unfit due to the hike. The water level was almost dry so there wasn't much of a waterfall. We didn't see any baboons or much animals so the nature part of the tour was non-existent. We ate at the restaurant by the bridge and had a vegan style meal. We then left where we stopped at Entoto park for about 30 minutes. The view of the city was nice and the park was clean and appeared like a good place for a relaxing time. We got dropped off at the airport at approximately 6pm. Our tour guide Emanuel was excellent. Now the moment of truth. Was the tour worth the $100 per person (plus the $80 visa)? No absolute not. The ride was long and bumpy and zooming through the road with people walking on it made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe. The driver navigated without issues but the road was just not worth the body aches. I'm sure a closer church in Addis Ababa would have been better than driving 3 hours there and 3 hours back. The 6 hours of driving was just too long and the sites were not worth going. Our tour guide Emanuel was friendly and he tried to make us feel comfortable which we really appreciated. I would go with him but probably on a different tour. I highly don't recommend this tour and wished for some of my money and time back (no fault of the tour guide). Overall looking back at the experience of the tour, it felt more of a scam since we spent most of the time driving to rural locations not worth going.

Zee was an amazing guide and conversationalist - full of information and facts. Very knowledgeable. Wish we had spent longer at the lunch stop/Portuguese bridge as we had spent a long time at the church. Very passionate guide!
