  • Rozafa Castle, Shkoder, Albania
    A story of love and tragedy, a metaphor of Albania's history! Perhaps the most beautiful part of this visit is to live the legend of how Rozafa castle was built to never fall, and after whom it was named! Inside the castle museum are artifacts that date back 4000 years, around the same time it is believed the Rozafa castle was built. A time this land was ruled by Illyrians (early Albanians). It has since fallen many times in front of Roman Armies, Slavic and Ottoman invasions, as recently as the first world war. The castle stands on a hilltop, looking down on Shkodra City, and the valleys below. Inside the castle is built in layers that show how the destruction and building has evolved over thousands of years.

    Shkodra, surrounded by mountains on one side and on the shores of the largest lake in the Balkans on the other. The city is well known through history, since the time of the Illyrian (Ancient Albania) kingdoms. Through history has been referred to as cradle of culture, with a history of thousands of years of brave people proud of their culture that they carry with them even in now in modern society. Visit of the city will start with downtown Shkodra, in the main promenade, famous for a delightful walk for which Shkodra is known. During the walk you can see the main sights of Shkodra including the Democracy Square, the many fountains and monuments in the city, etc. The people of Shkodra are famous for their love for arts, starting with photography and you can experience it at the Marubi private collection of photography, where you'll view numerous photographs depicting Albanian culture and social life since 1858. (Entry fee at Marubi Photo museum is not included in price)

Full day tour to Shkodra from Tirana!! I found Albanian Eagle tours through a Web search and booked my tour. I was a solo female traveller and initially has got some inhibitions like how will be the the place and the tour guide. I was lucky to get Mr. Dorian, who's incredibly knowledgeable, flexible and very friendly. He explained everything about Albanian history&culture in general and give a deep insight about the fascinating Rozafa castle and the confluence of rivers of Shkodra and its neighbourhood Village.
