As I (Albert Coffee, vaccinated) guide you through this magical place, where I had the privilege of participating during the 2004 excavation field season, I'll share what I have gleaned through personal hands-on experience & years of study about ancient Mesoamerica, the legends & wisdom of local people. I am a graduate of Louisiana State University and federally licensed tour guide. This special tour includes years of documented legends, wisdom & memories of the elders of the ranch communities on and around the historic location. You will hear about each place and its cultural significance as you journey along the path the ancients took to reach the pyramid. I've taken 20,000+ people on tours since the site opened to the public in 2011. My passion is relating information that is just coming to light in an area recently investigated in an enjoyable way.     The best way to visit the Cañada de la Virgen is with an expert guide. Along the way, Albert will share his knowledge of cultures of the Bajio region, including the Otomi people and other Mesoamerican cultures. After visiting the Welcome Center, we will walk a total of approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) together, taking the same path as the ancients. Albert will show you recent discoveries at the archaeological site and you’ll be able to climb to the top of the pyramid. Along the way, you will see the impressive landscapes as your mind goes on a journey. You will leave with a more thorough knowledge of this wonderful, historical site.

Guide was very good. Very knowledgeable able to impart feeling through anecdotes to large swaths of time. Good natured and humorous. A great guide for an initiation to mesoamerican civilizations.

Albert Coffee, our english-speaking archeologist guide at Cañada de La Virgen shared a wealth of information on our Tuesday tour. We left from the Centro and it was a nice 20 minute A/C van ride. We appreciated his prepared presentation to keep the tour on track and not miss any details. The pyramid complex is beautiful and fascinating! It is hard to imagine the difficult, barbaric, superstitious and ceremonial-filled lifestyle of the intelligent Otomi over a thousand years ago. Highly Recommend! You can still climb the pyramid here! NOTE: There is a lot of uphill/downhill walking and at 7,000 feet (2,150 meters) the beauty of the area isn’t the only thing to take your breath away! Pyramid stairs are steep and narrow so you should be in very good physical health. Sunscreen, protective hat (even in winter), excellent shoes to walk and hike, and lots of water (some provided by our tour before the hike) are necessary. Backpacks, snacks, purses and bags are NOT allowed at the pyramid and were securely stored in the van. Enjoy!

I had high hopes for this tour and they were exceeded. Getting to walk this site with an archaeologist who has lived all of the progress and history was an incredible experience. The site being remote and limited access helps make it unique and private among other similar places - no vendors, and limited other visitors. We also got to see some beautiful horses along the way. The tradeoff is that you do have to walk a ways under direct sun, so plan ahead with sunblock and/or appropriate wear. But absolutely do it, you won’t regret it.
