In the Gallo-Roman period, this area was the site of the baths, theatre and the temple of Diana which with its surrounding greenery makes for a romantic backdrop.

    The Roman amphitheatre (or arena) in Nîmes is the best-conserved of the Roman world. The monument was turned into a fortress in the Middle Ages, forming a refuge for the population in case of danger. The inner part was later filled by private houses until the nineteenth century. In 1809, houses, chapels and the chateau of the viscounts of Nîmes were demolished to give the monument its initial appearance. Today, the amphitheatre forms a fine venue for many occasions—bullfights, congresses, concerts and sports events.

Our tour guide was very nice and I would like to contact her again when we visit the South of France. I also left my fan in her van and said that I will get it back when I book my next trip. Unfortunately I lost her contact number. Please help me get a hold of her to plan our next trip.

The teenagers and adults all enjoyed this tour. It was small so easily personalized. Our ver knowledgeable guide answered all questions and helped us learn about this area of Provence going back 5000 years!
