I was real unimpressed by this tour. No “amazing or WOW” moment, as I was waiting and waiting for something to wake me up.
The Mud Volcanoes, as with the rest of the country scenery, is a muddy wasteland with occasional “burbing” of methane gas through puddles of mud. Boring! I expected an intellectual explanation of the place, instead I was unimpressed and falling asleep!
They make a big deal out of Qobustan, which is only a bunch of rocks with some scratches on the rocks. Unfortunately, many of the “scratches” seem fresh as if the park managers wanted to highlight them, as they were originally practically invisible. If you have been to the Alps or Rocky Mountains, Qobustan will put you to sleep.
Absheron Fire Temple is no longer what it was because in the past they exploited all the natural gas from the ground. They were very careful not to criticize the government for screwing up this historic site. Now it is on “life support” with artificial gas pumped in. Again, boring visit and I was falling asleep as the tour guide rushed everyone from room to room, trying to create excitement for this boring tour.
Yanardag is another unspoken governmental disaster as pumping of gas nearby has ruined the original beauty of this site. Now it looks like a outdoor fire place, real boring and artificial. Again, I was falling asleep from the stupidity of it all.
Lunch was a bit more interesting, except that the unexperienced waiters crash-banged the plates and all the food ended up on the floor. This woke me up and made me laugh, finally. The roaming cat in the restaurant also was happy to eat some chicken off the floor.
The guide was friendly, but as a linguist I must confess that listening to someone speak “broken English” for several hours starts to become annoying and one one tunes out from the gibberish. Please, if you are going to charge expensive amounts for your tours, get someone to guide the tour who speaks English properly and fluently!
Therefore, in light of the above comments, I do NOT recommend this outrageously expensive tour.
