Oranienburg, Oranienburg, Brandenburg, Germany Walk through the town of Oranienburg, which was deeply intertwined with the Nazi regime, both through its proximity to Sachsenhausen concentration camp and the direct involvement of local businesses in the exploitation of forced labor. Many local factories, including those producing war materials, relied on prisoners from Sachsenhausen for slave labor, contributing to the Nazi war effort. The town's residents were either aware of or complicit in the suffering occurring just outside their doorsteps. Some townspeople directly participated in the Nazi regime's operations, while others turned a blind eye, accepting the economic benefits and avoiding confrontation with the brutality taking place. 25 minutes
Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen, Oranienburg, Brandenburg, Germany During the 1936 Olympics, hosted by Nazi Germany, slave laborers were forced to build a new concentration camp just north of Berlin, intended to hold the Nazis’ political enemies. This camp was Sachsenhausen, and during the next decade some 200,000 people were imprisoned within the camp before it was evacuated by the Soviets in 1945. For another five years, the Soviets used the camp to imprison 60,000 war criminals, including Nazis and Nazi collaborators.

My brother and I had a fantastic private tour of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp with Martin. Martin was extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of WW2, the Third Reich, Berlin, and the Concentration Camps. If you are ever in Berlin and want a top notch tour of Sachsenhausen, I definitely recommend this tour and Martin!

I made a last-minute booking (24 hours) with the team at Insider Berlin tour team. Firstly, Mike - the representative from the tour company was a great communicator and promptly confirmed my tour, provided further information regarding the booking and answered all my queries.
For a tour of such gravity, I had the pleasure of spending the day with Ioana (pronounced Joanna). She was really the subject matter expert, and I couldn't have asked for a better and more knowledgeable guide. We met at the front of my hotel at the selected time and experienced local and regional trains out to Oranienburg, where we opted to catch a short taxi ride (about 6 Euros) to the camp. With Ioana's explanation of the thoughts and impact that was put behind the camp with historical background, the context of how Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp fit into Nazi history was an eye-opening and humbling experience. Ioana was professional and kind, offered excellent local knowledge in between WWII conversations, and completely tailored my experience based on my knowledge.
It was a long day (16,000 steps by the time I got back to the hotel) but thoroughly enjoyable. For those contemplating a private tour, it was worth every penny (or Euro in this case) I've spent.
Thank you, Ioana and Insider Berlin tour team, for a great experience!
