San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo, Spain -We will make the hike to the top of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe! Expect to spend approximately 2 hours hiking to the top and back. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
-Located just off the shore along the Bay of Biscay and 35 km (22 miles) east from Bilbao, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a definite “must” if you are visiting the Basque Country. Many will recognize San Juan de Gaztelugatxe as the island fortress of “Dragonstone” from season 7 of Game of Thrones, however, its real name can be translated as “castle rock” from Basque (“gaztelu” = castle + “aitz” = rock).
-The island is connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge. The bridge transitions into a narrow path that contains 241 steps and zigzags its way back and forth to the top. These steps have even been recognized as one of the world’s grandest staircases.

I cannot recommend this tour enough. Irene picked us up at the hotel. On the way to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, she entertained and educated us with information about the history of the site, Basque culture, Bilbao history, and more. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe itself is dramatic and thrilling. The Bermeo part of the trip was lovely as well, and the pintxos were the best we have had in three trips to Spain. Eskerrik asko (thank you in Basque), Irene.

My husband and I traveled to the Basque country as part of our honeymoon trip, and, being Game of Thrones fans, decided to sign up for this excursion. We are so happy we did! Irene was an excellent guide. She provided history and context and was so easy to talk to. She offered to take our pictures and knew all the best picturesque spots to stop. She introduced us to txakoli wine when we stopped for a pintxo lunch and was a wealth of information about where to go and what to eat in Bilbao. You won't regret signing up for this hike and lunch tour!

Irene was such an amazing tour guide. She was punctual, knowledgeable and very patient with us. She showed us all the great photo spots and helped us take some too. The views were amazing and we were glad to see a bit of Basque Country on our trip. It was such a fun time and Irene was a big part of it! She even gave us some recommendations around the city. Thank you, Irene!
