About 20 minutes south of Tulum, we have the opportunity to enjoy an incredible bird diversity, learn about the current Maya culture and the ancient Maya civilization as we walk and look for birds in the village and archaeological site of Muyil. We explore different habitats in the village with different types of vegetation: mature semi-deciduous jungle in the archaeological site of Muyil and some fresh water wetlands as we walk through flooded jungle using a boardwalk until we reach a fresh water lagoon. On this tour it is possible to identify from 40 to 80 species of birds (depending on the time of the year). There is also the possibility to add a boat trip across two lagoons and a lazy river floating experience to this tour. We float in a truly unique setting, listening to the sounds of nature, among mangroves, orchids & bromeliads. Be aware that if you are the only client booking this tour, we will offer you to go another day or offer you to do the tour in private (230 usd)

    Our first stop will the Mayan village of Muyil which provides an excellent opportunity to see a vast number of species

    The archaeological site of Muyil marks the entrance to the Biosphere of Sian Ka´an. We will walk through the site in search of birds whilst learning about this archaeological site which was once an important Mayan trading post.

    As we get deeper into Sian Ka´an, we get to witness different ecosystems. We will use a boardwalk to get across flooded jungle and come out onto a lagoon.

We saw an extensive number of amazing, beautiful birds. Claudio was an excellent guide and found so many birds for us.

This was phenomenal! Claudio (our guide) really knows his stuff. He could ID every bird song and the quickest of birds darting through the trees and brush. We saw close to 70 species in total, many of which were lifers for me. Not only did we get to see an incredible variation of species, but Claudio also showed us some Mayan ruins inside sian kaan and told us some amazing stories of the Mayan. He also identified many of the trees and plants and told us of their medicinal uses during the time of the Mayans. I cannot say enough about how incredible this trip was, definitely the highlight of my trip. Be sure to take and drink lots of water and bring your own binoculars. I would also highly suggest a good camera, I didn't have one so I missed out on a lot of cool pictures of the birds, ruins, and monkeys we saw.

I had two birding trips with Miguel Amar, and both were just wonderful! One trip was to the Mayan Pueblo of Muyil and the adjacent portion of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and the other was to the Pueblo and the Mayan city of Cobá. Miguel is an excellent birding guide who really knows the birds and where to find them. He is also very skilled at identifying birds by ear, which was a huge plus. He speaks excellent English, which was so helpful because my Spanish is still pretty rudimentary. He is also very knowledgeable about Mayan history and culture, and we learned a lot from him as he guided us at the Mayan cities of Cobá and Muyil. Even better, Miguel is a wonderfully personable and fun guy who deeply cares about birds, their habitats, and their conservation. I can wholeheartedly recommend Miguel as a birding and Mayan culture/ruins guide!
